Episode 136: The Assassination of Patrice Lumumba — The West's First Post-Colonial Murder

This episode belongs to a small category: TRUE. The assassination of Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was a conspiracy. It was planned with the involvement of the CIA, the Belgian government, and factions within the Congolese military. It resulted in the murder of one of the most significant independence leaders in African history, forty-two days into his term. And its consequences — the installation of the CIA-backed dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled the Congo for thirty-two years with extraordinary brutality and extracted its resources for the benefit of foreign interests — are still being paid by the Congolese people today.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the assassination of Patrice Lumumba — what the documentary record establishes, what the CIA's role was, what Belgium's role was, and what his death tells us about the relationship between Cold War geopolitics and the fate of post-colonial independence movements across Africa.

Patrice Lumumba was elected prime minister in May 1960, months before Congolese independence from Belgium. He was a charismatic, pan-African nationalist who wanted genuine independence — including control of the Congo's extraordinary mineral wealth, which included the uranium that had fuelled the Manhattan Project. His election was regarded with alarm in Washington, Brussels, and in the offices of the Union Minière du Haut Katanga, the Belgian mining company that controlled the country's copper and uranium deposits. Within weeks of independence, CIA director Allen Dulles sent a cable to the CIA station in Leopoldville describing Lumumba as a Castro or Patrice-figure who must be removed. The cable, declassified and published by the Church Committee in 1975, authorised the removal of Lumumba "as an urgent and prime objective."

The CIA's plan involved providing poisoned toothpaste to an agent in Congo, though the poison was never used. Lumumba was eventually captured by forces loyal to Colonel Joseph Mobutu — with CIA and Belgian encouragement — and transferred to the breakaway province of Katanga in January 1961. On January 17th, 1961, he was beaten, shot, and killed. His body was dissolved in sulphuric acid. A Belgian police officer, Gerard Soete, later admitted to dissolving the body and kept two of Lumumba's teeth as trophies. His tooth was returned to his family by the Belgian government in 2022, sixty-one years after his murder.

Belgium conducted a parliamentary investigation in 2001 that concluded the Belgian government bore "moral responsibility" for Lumumba's death. The United States government has never formally acknowledged its role, though the Church Committee documentation makes that role unambiguous. Mobutu, who renamed himself and his country in a performance of post-colonial nationalism, ruled until 1997 with consistent Western support, allowing the Congo's resources to be extracted while his population remained among the poorest in the world.
